About Me

Hello and welcome to Amber’s Confections. Before we start baking together, I should introduce myself. I’m a twenty-something marketing and graphic design professional by day, baking enthusiast by night. I was born and raised in South Central Pennsylvania in a family of self-taught cooks specializing in meat and potatoes, freshly baked pies and Pennsylvania Dutch cuisine. Hog maw anyone?

Baking began as a hobby for me in college when the cupcake trend first started. I bought myself a cupcake stand, a piping bag and a few trendy cookbooks and voila, I was a baker. I baked for my roommate’s birthdays, for our weekly Grey’s Anatomy viewing parties and sometimes just because it was a good excuse not to study. My senior year, I designed the cupcake logo you can currently view at the top of the page as a project for a graphic design class. The logo sat in my design portfolio for more than three years before its debut, right here on my blog.

That's me on the right, with my friend Tara. And yes, we only eat cake when wearing feather boas.

Two years ago, I started taking custom orders for baked goods for events. It began with red velvet cupcakes with hand made fondant leaves for my friend Jenn’s bridal shower. Last year, I baked and delivered 300 assorted cookies for the wedding of my friends Matt and Missy in Pittsburgh, PA. I designed my own business cards, bought a domain name and was well on my way to starting my own business. But, something was missing… an audience, clients and hungry people in general. After all, I can only eat so many cupcakes myself.

Always looking for the next trend in baked goods, I began reading food blogs. It started with Ree Drummond’s The Pioneer Woman and I quickly acquired more than 20 "must-read" blogs a day. Complete with mouth-watering photos and tantalizing descriptions these food blogs have become known to some as “food porn” and I will admit, I’m an addict.

So here it is, is my attempt at recreating what I read daily. An attempt to introduce my readers (hopefully, I’ll have readers one day) to some amazing culinary creations. To challenge myself to improve my writing skills, photography skills and graphic design skills. An attempt to get my name out there. Will this blog lead me to my future career? A bakery perhaps? Pastry school? Who knows. But until then, I’ll write my little blog and hope that someone out there enjoys reading it as much as I enjoy creating it.

Oh, and one day I hope to perfect the croquembouche.
